Constantine the Great marched with his army in the year 312 AD against his enemy Maxentius. Before the battle outside the walls of Rome, both he and all his troops saw a shining cross in the heavens with these words: “In this sign you shall conquer.” Immediately Constantine had a cross placed on the standards of his army and then went on to defeat Maxentius.
