1. The Existence of God Is Rationally Knowable
Atheism claims there is no God, but Catholic philosophy maintains that:
The human mind can know God by reason, not just faith.
The existence of God is not blind belief—it is supported by philosical demonstration.
Core idea:
If the world exists, there must be a sufficient explanation for it.
2. The Five Classical Proofs (St. Thomas Aquinas)
These are not scientific experiments, but logical demonstrations:
A. Motion → First Mover
Everything in motion is moved by another → must be an Unmoved Mover (God)
B. Causation → First Cause
Every effect has a cause → must be an Uncaused Cause
C. Contingency → Necessary Being
Things can exist or not exist → must be a Necessary Being
D. Degrees → Supreme Perfection
We recognize degrees of goodness → implies a Perfect standard
E. Design → Intelligent Designer
Order in nature → implies intelligence, not chance
👉 Together: The universe points beyond itself to God.
3. The Impossibility of Infinite Regress
Atheism often implies:
Endless chains of causes
No ultimate explanation
But:
An infinite regress never explains anything
Without a first cause, nothing would exist now
Conclusion:
There must be a first, uncaused reality → God
4. The Universe Requires an Explanation
The universe:
Exists
Is ordered
Is intelligible
Atheism must explain this without God—but:
Chance cannot explain order and law
Matter cannot explain its own existence
Conclusion:
The universe is dependent, not self-explanatory
5. Moral Argument
Humans recognize:
Objective good and evil
Moral obligation
But if atheism is true:
Morality is subjective
No ultimate justice exists
Yet:
We know certain acts are truly wrong (e.g., murder)
Conclusion:
Objective morality points to a moral lawgiver
6. Human Nature Points Beyond Itself
Humans possess:
Reason
Free will
Desire for truth and eternity
Materialism cannot explain:
Consciousness
Rational thought
Spiritual longing
Conclusion:
Man is not reducible to matter → implies a spiritual origin
7. Atheism Cannot Account for Meaning
If there is no God:
Life has no ultimate purpose
Truth is accidental
Death ends everything
But human experience:
Seeks meaning
Seeks truth
Seeks eternity
Conclusion:
The human heart points to God
8. Historical Argument: Christ
Christianity claims:
God revealed Himself in Jesus Christ
Evidence includes:
Miracles
Fulfilled prophecy
The Resurrection
Conclusion:
Not only does God exist—He has revealed Himself
⚖️ Final Conclusion
The Catholic argument against atheism is cumulative:
The world requires a cause
Order requires intelligence
Morality requires a lawgiver
Human nature requires a spiritual source
History points to divine revelation
👉 Therefore:
Atheism fails to adequately explain reality, while belief in God provides a coherent, rational, and complete explanation of existence.
