Stained-Glass

If you look at a stained-glass window from the outside of a church, it appears to you unsightly and grotesque, without form or beauty. It conveys no meaning to your mind. But if you view the same window from within, how rich and beautiful it appears, especially when the sunlight of heaven is shining upon it! How it embellishes the church, and how admirably the group of figures is calculated to illustrate some scene of Scripture or of ecclesiastical history! In like manner, a stranger to our religion regards our ceremonies as vain and meaningless. – James Cardinal Gibbons
