Terrorist Attacks suffered by the American People

Statement by Dr George Pell
Catholic Archbishop of Sydney

By + Cardinal George Pell
Archbishop of Sydney

12 September 2001

Like all Australians, I am appalled and deeply saddened by the terrorist attacks suffered by the American people last night, and by the horrendous loss of life.

My own prayers and those of the Catholic people of Sydney are with those killed and injured in the attacks, and with their families. I know we are joined in this by Christians around the country, and by members of the Jewish and Muslim communities.

Australia has offered to assist the United States in bringing to justice those responsible for these attacks, and I support this. The attacks open a new and horrifying page in the history of terrorism, and all those who value open and democratic societies should work together to meet this significant threat. We pray that the leaders of the free world will be wise and strong and that those few working for a widening circle of hate and violence will be disappointed.

At 5.30pm tonight, I will offer Mass at St Mary's Cathedral for the victims of these attacks. Tomorrow at 11am, I will lead the children attending Catholic schools in this city in a prayer service for all those affected by the attacks.

In the midst of the tension and uncertainty the attacks have created, even in our own country, it is important to ensure that nothing disrupts the social harmony we rightly value as a distinctive part of Australian life.
