Noah’s Ark (Was it big enough?)

Modern skeptics attempt to show from the figures given as to the size of the Ark, that it would have been impossible for it to house all the animals listed in the Mosaic narrative of the Flood. According to Flavius Josephus, the great historian of the Jewish people, the dimensions of the Ark were 300 cubits long, 50 in width and 30 in height. Now a cubit measures about 21 inches. This would make the Ark approximately 526 feet long, 88 feet wide and 52 1/2 feet high, larger in size than a World War II cargo ship. Present day ship owners allow about 40 cubic feet of space to a ton of freight in storage. That would give the ark a cubic measurement or 2,375,100 feet and a displacement of 59,377 tons. As the vessel had no superstructure, that is deck houses of bridges, and cannot be supposed to have had to allow space for any purpose such as an engine room, etc., these measurements do not exaggerate the Ark’s carrying capacity. The description of Josephus says that the Ark was built up to the top, that she had no masts, and was roofed in to keep out the waters of the deluge. If we divided the Ark into ten foot by ten foot compartments, using the above dimensions, there would have been 2,375 compartments. This would have been to keep the distinctive species separated.

Many experts have compiled interesting statistics to show what might have been done with a structure of this size. But it is sufficient to know that even from a modern point of view the Ark had ample capacity for the purpose intended by God. In this, as in other things, the Mosaic narrative will stand the test of time.
