The Scapular In Latin the word “scapula” means “shoulder,” and for many centuries the garment which all workman wore over their clothes to preserve them from wear and stains, was called a scapular for this reason. It was formed of two wide bands of cloth, which joined on the shoulders, and reached the knees both back and front. The Carmelites established the scapular as a religious insignia in the thirteenth century. © Evangelization Station, 2010
