Churches destroyed
During the two years of extensive allied aerial bombardment of Germany that led
to the country’s surrender in May 1945 more than 10,000 Catholic Cathedrals and
Churches were destroyed. Fewer than 2,000 Catholic Churches remained standing at
the end of the war.
