St. Thomas More’s obedience to his conscience
Henry VIII cast St. Thomas More into prison and martyred because More would not sanction the decrees Henry enacted against the Catholic Church. More might have saved his life if he would have taken the oath of royal supremacy. His friends counseled him to take the oath, making use of the words: “I swear to obey all that my lord and king may ordain,” but making at the same time a mental reservation that he referred to the ordinances of the Lord of lords and King of kings. But More was too honorable, too conscientious, to have recourse to this subterfuge: “I must swear what is required of me and not what I think,” he answered. “I will not take the oath and deceive either myself or other people.” © Evangelization Station, 2010 |
