Catholicism’s Moral Teaching

Catholicism’s moral teaching is not mysterious and impenetrable, something to be taken on faith but not understood. The principles which underlie all of the Catholicism’s moral teachings are written in the human heart; they have their origins in nature itself. So, we can see the truth of the moral norms which the Church teaches. When we do not immediately do so, we can take it that the problem is with us, not with the teaching.

Everyone is subject to natural law from birth because it contains only those duties, which are derivable from human nature itself, and because, absolutely speaking, its essentials can be grasped by the unaided light of human reason.

St. Paul recognizes the existence of a natural law when he describes the moral responsibility of those ancients who did not have the benefit of Mosaic revelation. “Pagans” he says, “who never heard of the Law but are led by reason to do what the Law commands, may not actually ‘possess’ the Law, but they can be said to ‘be’ the Law. They can point to the substance of the Law engraved on their hearts-they can call a witness, that is, their own conscience-they have an accusation and defense, that is, their own inner mental dialogue.

Most people love freedom when it means being able to do what they want, when they want to do it. But they don’t like freedom when it means the responsibility of making moral choices and living with the consequences. Every time a person makes a moral judgment, they are criticized for lacking “compassion,” and labeled as a fascist, fanatic, or fanatic. There is a double standard in most of our society, especially the media. If anyone dares to suggest that homosexual intercourse is wrong, that person is a homophobic fanatic. However, if that same person were to denounce political corruption, or industrial espionage, or sudden tax hikes, he would be considered enlightened and responsible.

Moral absolutes are rooted in natural law. The homosexual lifestyle is fundamentally unnatural, and cannot be justified no matter how homosexuals try to do so. Studies regarding sexual orientation and mental health indicate that homosexuals and bisexuals are about 50% more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to suffer from depression and abuse drugs. Researchers also have found that the risk of suicide jumped over 200% for those who had engaged in a homosexual lifestyle. Guilt is a heavy burden.
