In Mormonism, the God of this planet was Michael the Archangel, who came to earth and became Adam.
Brigham Young, while in the presence of Joseph Smith Jr., made a dramatic statement claiming that the voice of a living prophet was superior to the “Book or Mormon”, the “Book of Doctrine and Covenants”, and the Bible.
On October 8, 1854, Brigham Young, speaking as a living oracle said, “I feel inclined here to make a little scripture. I will venture to make a little.” “This only true God is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ precisely as he is our Father”….” “You may add these words to it, or let it alone, it is all the same to me, that He is not only the Father of our spirits, but also of our flesh. He being the founder of that natural machinery through which we all have obtained our bodies.’ His name? The name of the ‘but to us God’? The name of the ‘but one God, the Father?’ The name of Brigham’s ‘God’? The name of that God is Adam; Adam, according to Brigham, is God the Father.”
When Brigham Young identified Adam as the Mormon God at the General Conference his pronouncement became Mormon scripture, just as he intended. Young did not stand alone in this. Thousands of Mormons including many of Mormonism’s most highly regarded, accepted their prophet’s words as duly inspired. On the day Young declared God as Adam to the Latter-day Saints, a future Mormon prophet, Wilford Woodruff, wrote in his journal, “I believe that he preach[ed] the greatest sermon that was ever delivered to the Latter-day Saints since they have been a people” (Journal 1833-1898).
The Speaker: Brigham Young
The teaching: Adam is God
The Doctrine: There are other Gods, but Adam the Father is the only God of our concern.
Mormon Apostle Bruce McConkie, in “Mormon Doctrine” (1966, p. 18.) described the Adam-God Doctrine as a theory, rather than a doctrine of the LDS Church. “Cultists and other enemies of the restored truth, for their own nefarious purposes sometimes try to make it appear that Latter-day Saints worship Adam as their Father in heaven.”
Young and many other prominent leaders unequivocally agreed that Adam was God.
Adam was described as “God the Father” in the “Journal of Discourses”, Vols. 7:285; 8:174; and 14:111.
Mormon theology also teaches, “When the time came to people the earth, the spirit Michael [the Archangel] inhabited the body formed from the dust of the earth, the living soul thus created being known as Adam” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 445)
