Bible Alone or Bible plus Tradition?

Those who maintain that Scripture is the sole source of Christian knowledge limit their knowledge of essential Christianity. The reading of Scripture is not, and never was, intended by Christ to be man’s sole guide in the great affair of salvation. He intended man’s guide to be the teaching Church He founded and commissioned to teach all men in His name.

1 Cor. 11:2 – I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you.

2 Thess. 2:15 – So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

2 Thess. 3:6 – Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

Jn 21:25 – But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Mk. 13:31 – Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Acts 20:35 – In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. (saying of Jesus not recorded in Gospels.)

2 Tim 1:13-14 – Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; 14 guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.

2 Tim 2:2 – and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

2 Pet. 1:20 – First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation.

2 Pet. 3:15-16 – And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

1 Pet. 1:25 – but the word of the Lord abides for ever. That word is the good news which was preached to you.

Rom. 10:17 – So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ.

1 Cor. 15:3 – For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures.

Mk 16:15-16 – And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned..

Mt. 23: 2-3 – chair of Moses, observe what they tell you.

St. Irenæus of Lyon [inter AD 180/199] “For how should it be if the apostles themselves had not left us writings? Would it not be necessary, [in that case,] to follow the course of the tradition which they handed down to those to whom they did commit the Churches?…As I said before, the Church, having received this preaching and this faith, although she is disseminated throughout the whole world, yet guarded it, as if she occupied but one house. She likewise believes these things [of doctrine] just as if she had but one soul and one and the same heart; and harmoniously she proclaims them and teaches them and hands them down as if she possessed only one mouth. For, while the languages of the world are diverse, nevertheless, the authority of the tradition is one and the same ” (Against Heresies 1, 10, 2).

Origen [AD 220-230) “Although there are many who believe that they themselves hold to the teachings of Christ, there are yet some among them who think differently from their predecessors. The teaching of the Church has indeed been handed down through an order of succession from the apostles and remains in the churches even to the present time. This alone is to be believed as the truth which is in no way at variance with ecclesiastical and apostolic tradition” (Fundamental Doctrines 1, Pref., 2).
