If man had no dread of God’s justice, they would not question His existence. “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1) The wish is father to the thought. They would like to persuade themselves and others that there is no God. Nevertheless, it is all in vain. His presence ever haunts them.
God reveals himself to us as our Creator, as our Lawgiver, as our Judge. As our Creator, He manifests Himself to us by His works. As our Lawgiver, He speaks to us by His lay written on our hearts. As our Judge, He speaks to us by the voice of conscience. We understand Him by our reason, our moral sense, and our conscience. Therefore, as long as a man continues to exercise his intellectual and moral faculties, he professes his faith in the existence of a living God.
Two travelers arrived one evening at an inn, the landlord of which was a professed atheist. Having taken rooms for the night, after dinner they sat at the open window, contemplating the starry vault of heaven and admiring the omnipotence of the Creator and the beauty of His works. The innkeeper, overhearing their conversation, laughed at them as a couple of fools, declaring that there was no God; all evolved in the course of nature. Soon afterward the travelers retired to rest, and the landlord shortly thereafter followed their example. In the dead of night, a fire broke out in an adjoining house; the innkeeper was awakened by the barking of dogs and the glare of the fire. Hurrying out, he was seen to throw up his hands, and, looking up to heaven he cried, “O merciful God, spare my house; do not let it be burned down”. By this time the travelers were also awake, and hearing him, they called out, “Yesterday you declared there was no God; now you are imploring His help. It is not likely that He will grant your prayer; on the contrary, He will punish you for your impious denial of Him.” So it came to pass, for shortly afterward, the inn too was in flames. Even atheists call upon God when they are in trouble.
