Christians believe in hell, because the Bible clearly states that hell exists.
Scripture speaks of hell in many ways:
- as a place of torment,[1]
- as the netherworld,[2]
- as the abyss,[3]
- as a fiery furnace,[4]
- as a pool of fire,[5]
- as a fiery pool of burning sulfur[6],
- as a pool of fire and sulfur,[7]
- as Tartarus—Greek mythological place of punishment,[8]
- as Gehenna or as the fire of Gehenna.[9]
As a state, Scripture speaks of hell with numerous descriptive words:
- as death[10],
- as the second death,[11]
- as eternal ruin,[12]
- as outside darkness,[13]
- as eternal fire,[14]
- as eternal punishment,[15]
- as destruction,[16]
- as damnation,[17]
- as perishing,[18]
- as unquenchable fire,[19]
- as fire and sulfur,[20]
- as thick gloom of darkness,[21]
- as corruption,[22]
- as Babylon[23]
