Cause for Beatification and
Canonization Edict On Saturday, 2 April 2005, upon entering the Lord's Day, the Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, the Lord called to Himself, from the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father John Paul II. The Servant of God, a Man who lived an intense life of prayer, a tireless Pastor of the universal Church and courageous Witness of the Gospel of Christ, entrusting himself completely to God's will and to the Virgin; Mary, confirmed in his vast and rich Magisterium the centrality of the Mystery of the Eucharist in the life of the Church. He indicated to every baptized person each one's primary commitment to holiness, defined as the "high standard of ordinary Christian living". At the moment of his death, with the impressive explosion of his fame of holiness which he already enjoyed while alive, and with the formal request to begin the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God, in making it known to the Ecclesial Community, we invite each and every one of the faithful to communicate with us directly or through the Diocesan Tribunal of the Vicariate of Rome (Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterano, 6 - 00184 ROMA) any information that could be favourable or contrary to the fame of holiness of the abovementioned Servant of God. Furthermore, having to collect, according to the legal provisions, all of the writings attributed to him, with the present EDICT we order those persons who have such writings to consign to the said Tribunal, without delay, any writing whose author is the Servant of God, if it has not yet been consigned to the Postulation of the Cause. We remind you that the term "writings" does not just mean the printed works which have already been collected, but any manuscripts, diaries, letters and every other personal writing of the Servant of God. Those who wish to keep the original may present a duly certified copy. In conclusion, we decree that the present EDICT will be displayed for two months on the doors of the Vicariate of Rome, as well as at the Curia of Krakow. It will be published in the "Rivista Diocesana" of Rome and in the daily newspapers of "L'Osservatore Romano" and "Avvenire". Given in Rome, from the See of the Vicariate, 18 May 2005. CAMILLO Card.
