Sins against the Holy Spirit See CCC §1864
Sins against the Holy Spirit are major offenses that carry a stubborn resistance to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit and a contempt of his gifts. The traditional list of sins against the Holy Spirit was drawn from various works of Saint Augustine: Presumption. They are despair of one’s salvation, envy of another’s spiritual good, opposing known truths of faith, obstinacy in sin, presumption of God’s mercy, and final impenitence. Because those who sin in this way, resisting grace, do not wish to repent, we say that their sins cannot be forgiven them. However the CCC §1864, says of the sin against the Holy Spirit: “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit... Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.” © Evangelization Station, 2010 |
