Sign of the Cross

(Signum crucis)

“The sign of the cross,” says St. Ignatius of Antioch, a disciple of St. John, “is the trophy raised against the power of the prince of this world; when he sees it, he is afraid; when he even hears of it, he is filled with terror.

No other ceremony is used so frequently during the celebration of the Mass as the sign of the cross. A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who make the Sign of the Cross.

Here is how you make the Sign of the Cross properly: begin with folded hands, place the left hand on your breast, as you say “In the name of the Father” with your right hand straight, touch your forehead with the fingers of the right hand; “and of the Son” with your right hand touch your breast just above your left hand; “and of the Holy…” touch your fingers to your left shoulder. “…Spirit.” Touch your right shoulder with the fingers of your right hand. “Amen”. Return your hands to the folded position.
