The heathen Emperor and his Christian servants
The Emperor Constantius Chlorus, the father of Constantine the Great decided to test the Christians that were under his authority. He had all his servants and courtiers called into his presence and required every one of them to sacrifice to the heathen gods, threatening to dismiss anyone who would refuse to comply with his command. Those who were Christians resolutely refused to scatter incense on the altars of idols. Only one man proved false to his faith and did what was required of him, thinking to gain the emperor’s favor. Instead the emperor said: “Now I see that you are unfaithful to your God. If your heavenly Master cannot trust in your fidelity, neither can I as your earthly master.” He then dismissed him from his service, while he rewarded the others and gave them proofs of the confidence he placed in them. © Evangelization Station, 2010 |
